What happened in Monterey Park, California on the night of January 21, 2023?

Monterey Park is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County.
On the eve of Lunar New Year on January 21, 2023, tens of thousands of people gathered in Monterey Park for one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations in Southern California. The Star Ballroom Dance Studio was holding a Lunar New Year countdown dance party nearby. At about 10:22PM PST, a gunman opened fire in the dance studio, killing eleven people and injuring nine others.

Providing safe resources and services for families and individuals affected by the Lunar New Year tragedy

MPK Hope is a resiliency center supported by a number of organizations, that came together to provide assistance and aid to victims of the shooting. We are continuously creating and putting together resources and mental health services to facilitate the healing and rebuilding of the families, individuals, and communities affected by the Lunar New Year tragedy.

Established on August 23, 2023, in response to the January 21, 2023 incident in Monterey Park, California. The Monterey Park mass shooting was a devastating event for the Asian community, particularly because it occurred during the Lunar New Year celebrations, a time traditionally marked by joy and togetherness. 


The attack not only shattered the sense of safety in a culturally significant space but also intensified the trauma and anxiety experienced by many Asian Americans.


The MPK Hope Resiliency Center was established immediately after the incident in corresponding to the needs of healing from the victims, their families and the community with the support from OVC, City of Monterey Park and many partners. 
MPK Hope RC provides essential protocols and resources for effective crisis response. 


Our goal is to reduce trauma and emotional impact through comprehensive support and recovery services, enhance resilience, and promote well-being. We help individuals and communities thrive under pressure, transform painful experiences, and foster overall wellness and joy in a safe, supportive environment.
