Coping with Grief and Trauma After a Shooting

When a shooting occurs in your local community, the grief and trauma can be overwhelming. You may feel a range of emotions - shock, anger, sadness, fear, and more. These feelings are all normal and valid. Here are some tips for coping in the aftermath:

  • Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions. Don't try to bottle them up. Talk to trusted friends and family, join a support group, or consider speaking to a mental health professional.

  • Take care of your physical health. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and exercise if you're able. This can help manage the stress.

  • Limit exposure to news coverage and social media about the event. While it's important to stay informed, constant reminders can exacerbate trauma.

  • Find healthy ways to process the experience, such as writing, art, or other creative outlets.

  • Be patient and compassionate with yourself. Healing from trauma takes time. Seek support when you need it.

Remember, you are not alone. The support center is here to provide resources and a community of care during this difficult time.
