Helping Children Cope With Community Violence

When a shooting happens in your neighborhood, it can be especially difficult for children to process. They may feel scared, confused, or insecure about their safety. As a parent or caregiver, here are some ways you can support them:

  • Have open, age-appropriate conversations about what happened. Listen to their thoughts and feelings without dismissing them.

  • Reassure them that they are safe and you are there to protect them. Maintain normal routines as much as possible.

  • Limit their exposure to media coverage, which can be overwhelming.

  • Encourage them to express their emotions through play, art, or journaling.

  • Watch for signs of trauma like changes in behavior, sleep, or appetite. Seek professional help if needed.

  • Take care of yourself so you can better support your child. Make sure to practice self-care.

The support center has child-friendly resources and counseling available. Don't hesitate to reach out for assistance in helping your family heal.
